Walk with conscience

Stephanie Robinson opened The Red Pair Shoe Store in Rossland this spring, and her inventory includes product lines that demonstrate environmental and social awareness. Shoes made by El Naturalista—a company that supports developing cultures—and Jambu, which utilizes recycled and re-usable materials whenever possible—are sold at The Red Pair, in addition to other cutting-edge brands.

Robinson encourages customers to bring their own shopping bags, but if they do require bags from the store, she gives out paper rather than plastic. This is one of several measures she takes to ensure that her business is as eco-friendly as possible.

“If we want a future for our kids, then we need to be aware of the footprint we are leaving on this earth,” said Robinson. “My store is named after my two children because they both have beautiful red hair—they are more aware of their footprint then I ever was at their age or even older.”

Finding her niche

Business ownership has proven to be a good fit for Robinson, whose ambition and drive make her an ideal entrepreneur.

“The most rewarding thing about owning The Red Pair is that I call all the shots (and bring my dog to work),” said Robinson. “I am independent and having my own business suits my personality. The most challenging aspect of this business is (deciding) what style of shoes to order. I usually go with what I love and hope that others will love my style too.”

In addition to shoes, The Red Pair sells handbags, socks and unusual gift items.
