Take on the challenge

Pride Gym's welcoming atmosphere has made it a vital part of Trail's fitness scene

by

Since 1991, Pride Gym has been providing the Trail community with fitness and education for all ages. The gym's coaches offer instruction on various mixed martial arts (MMA), as well as cardio classes and other activities.

"Pride Gym stands out from other facilities," said owner Glen Kalesniko, "not solely in our variation in martial arts options, but in our friendly gym atmosphere. This gym has not only managed to create consistent loyal members but has developed a passion in our area for MMA, which has transferred into having two annual events that have an incredibly enthusiastic following and which never fail to impress with our local talent."

There are classes available that conform to school schedules—a fabulous after-school option for young people—and even a tots program called Little Ninjas for children aged three to five years. Little Ninjas teaches the basics of Muay Thai kickboxing with no risk of contact. There are other youth programs available as well, so kids can start at the beginning and work their way up to advanced martial arts skills.

But it's not just the youngsters that can benefit from Pride Gym's offerings.

"For adults we have a varied selection of classes to start with," said Kalesniko, "such as Muay Thai cardio classes that are offered at various times throughout the week. Cardio class is the perfect opportunity for those just beginning their fitness journey or for those who are looking for a jolt of intensity to change up their routine."

A positive learning environment

The classes provide one-on-one focus, allowing novices to feel encouraged and to learn from others with more experience. The experienced members have the chance to improve their techniques further and to stay in great shape. There are also options for Jui Jitsu classes and competitive MMA for those who want to test their abilities in a controlled, safe environment.

Kalesniko describes an increase in the demand for fitness classes and specialized training. He has responded to the demand by adding more coaches and expanding the class schedules to accommodate the spike in interest. He also offers everyone the chance to take a free class to see if  they like the activity before signing up. There are family discounts and Pride Gym also participates in government-funded youth programs.

The gym gets rave reviews from its loyal members:

“Pride Gym coaches give good advice and help you learn if you don’t understand a move," said 10-year-old Tyra Delaire.

"All of the exceptional talent that comes out of Pride Gym and the exceptional atmosphere that surrounds this gym—it feels like my home away from home," said Jordan Knippleberg, aged 20.

“I’m proud to be a part of the Pride Gym family. This gym changes lives,” said Johnny Forry, aged 32.

Kalesniko has a fondness for Trail, and the lifestyle that is promoted there. Inspired by the devotion of his students, he commits himself solidly to the community.

"Living in Trail has always been enjoyable for me because of the casual, friendly lifestyle," he said. "People come and go as life runs its course but people always remain in contact with the gym and in touch with what goes on with us and follow our successes—this closeness is one of the many beauties of our community."

Pride Gym is located at 1425 Cedar Avenue in Trail, B.C., and can be reached at 250-364-3031.
