Located in downtown Cranbrook, the Dainty Daisy is an attractive store specializing in home decor, gaming and hobby supplies. Owner Cari Ellis has been in business for eight months now, and her company is continually expanding its product line to accommodate new interests.

Banding together

Even as a child, Ellis was showing a flair for entrepreneurship—setting up pretend stores with her toys and encouraging her family to "go shopping." Now she has four little shopkeepers of her own. Her sons—Liam, aged 12; Cole, 10; Carter, 5; and Logan, 3—play an integral role in her life and the direction she takes professionally. Her husband James is also an important part of her endeavour. Just as she encouraged his dream of becoming a pilot, he in turn supports her in pursuing her own goals.

“Without their support, I wouldn't be where I am right now,” said Ellis. “My older kids babysit after school . . . my two younger ones hang out with me here all week. And most of all, all the support I receive from my husband who not only supported me financially with this project, but also helps with the housework and takes time from his own projects to help me every single time I need him.”

A considerable selection

In addition to heartwarming home decor items, the Dainty Daisy carries a selection of hobby kits for all ages, gaming and art supplies, RC fuel products and materials for leatherworking and other crafts. Ellis has chosen some of her product lines based on the interests of her family. For instance, her eldest son's fascination with Warhammer inspired her to bring in models and accessories from the popular game. Her own interests are diverse, but she has a special place in her heart for scrapbooking.

“(I love) documenting my family and my life,” she said. “I try everything but that's always been my hobby."

Inventory is updated frequently and new items are brought in to fulfill customer requests. Special orders are welcomed. There is also a convenient space in the back of the store where Ellis holds regular group scrapbooking sessions and brings in instructors to teach workshops and classes on specialized arts and crafts. There have been classes on airbrushing, folk art, watercolour and other techniques, with more coming in the future.

The Dainty Daisy is located at 1013 Baker Street, Cranbrook, B.C.
