Paul Wortley knows that we miss the candy from the good old days. Those favourite sweets that you just can't find in most modern stores continue to bring smiles to our faces. That's why Wortley opened Side Street Sweet Shoppe in Fernie. The candy store originally opened in 2009, but in August of 2010, it expanded to a larger location to accommodate its growth.

“The nostalgic candies (are the most popular) but the saltwater taffy is a huge hit,” said Wortley. “We carry over 60 flavours of nut-free and gluten-free saltwater taffy. I am always asking customers what they like or what they would like to see in my store.”

Having a small business brings with it some specific challenges, such as finding suppliers for products and packaging; however, Wortley considers himself lucky to be a successful businessman in this thriving community.

“Aside from the mountains, Fernie is a 'Little Big City,' " he said. “It's great to be able to walk down the street and say hi to people and there isn't the rush of traffic or traffic jams. You can walk just about anywhere in Fernie.”

Next time you're in the area, be sure to stop by Side Street Sweet Shoppe to satisfy your craving for Beeman's gum, Curly Wurlys, Pink Elephant popcorn or other vintage-era treats.
