Keri Leeb holds a tidy house in high regard. She had experience cleaning professionally, but she recognized the dangers that come with being exposed to harsh chemicals on a regular basis. Finally she had had enough, and decided to take matters into her own hands. Her business, A Clean Alternative, has been blossoming in
Kimberley, B.C., ever since.

“The business was started in 2006 out of desperation really,” said Leeb. “I was cleaning at the time, but did not enjoy working with all the chemicals. Businesses were leery about switching to a green product, so I took it upon myself to do the research and create a niche.”

A Clean Alternative offers clients friendly, efficient service using products that are safe for the environment and the people who live in it. Leeb does cleaning in several areas such as rental properties, vacation homes and offices.

Benefits and challenges

Leeb has found that being a business owner has several perks. She is a mother as well as an entrepreneur, so having an adjustable timetable was an added bonus.

“I love the flexibility this business has to offer,” she said. “It works out really well balancing work with raising children. The time flexibility has definitely been the most rewarding aspect of owning a business.”

With her busy home and professional life, there are instances when time management can also be a challenge—but Leeb takes it all in stride.

“It’s hard to separate work from home life when emails are always waiting to be answered, and the phone is still ringing,” she said. “But I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Glad to be in the Kootenays

Leeb uses products with essential oils, so the cleaning experience is a relaxing one for her as well as for the people who work or live there. It’s just another example of creating a pleasurable existence wherever you are. The Kimberley area is a perfect fit for someone who wants a balanced lifestyle.

“The Kootenays have so much to offer in the way of an outdoor lifestyle,” said Leeb. “I feel very lucky to be able to enjoy my work and have time to play as well.”
