It’s funny how things come about and how a tradesman’s work can provide unexpected depths of satisfaction. Take the case of Traven Huscroft of Creston, B.C., for example.

After high school, Huscroft struggled to find his direction. He attended the University of Lethbridge for a couple of years, but still saw no clear path ahead. On impulse—or perhaps following an instinct—he joined the Canadian military. A lesson that became deeply ingrained in him during his six years of service is the importance of belonging to a strong, loyal community.

By the time Huscroft finished his military service, he had a new perspective on life and knew what he wanted next. He obtained his certification in the plumbing and heating trade, and learned more about the industry while working in the Lethbridge area. In 2003 he met a young Dutch woman who was visiting relatives in Canada; they married and now have three children.

In 2011, Huscroft and his family returned to his home town of Creston and he founded Tratech Mechanical Ltd., a small plumbing and heating service. In just four years, Tratech has grown into a full-service plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning service provider.

“Every year we’re getting busier,” Huscroft said. “I have four employees now, and all of them came here from Alberta—and that was before the (Alberta provincial) election.” With a note of pride in his voice, he added, “These people can make a decent wage here and enjoy the great lifestyle of the Creston Valley.”

Tratech’s projects have ranged from small residential plumbing repairs to upgrading the heating system in a local sawmill and replacing a biogas boiler for the City of Creston. Currently, Tratech is doing some large projects with the Lower Kootenay Band, helping them build a school and a roundhouse.

Huscroft said that Tratech is the only contractor in Creston that offers full service in this field: plumbing, heating, sheet metal, drain cleaning and air conditioning. “It just makes sense to have these related services all under one roof,” he said.

Anchored by strong ties with his immediate and extended family, Huscroft takes satisfaction in providing professional services to his community and employment to four new Creston residents. He is supporting and building the community to which he belongs.
