2016 Georgie Awards handed out to 44 B.C. winners at gala celebration

Recent awards gala shines light on one East Kootenay new home builder

Each year members of the Canadian Home Builders' Association of British Columbia (CHBA BC) celebrate excellence and innovation among home builders, renovators and developers in the province of British Columbia with the Georgie Awards.

The awards are named after Captain George Vancouver who was the first European to enter Burrard Inlet in June 1792.

This members-only recognition program has had great success since beginning in 1992. Hundreds of builders, renovators and developers from around B.C. have been recognized for excellence in home building, community development, renovation and innovation.

In the last few years, strong consumer and industry demand for enhanced energy efficiency in new homes and renovations has made that a criterion in each awards category.

According to Neil Moody, CEO of CHBA BC, “The categories for the Georgie Awards are diverse and symbolize the different types of housing projects taking place across the province. One of the many strengths of this awards program is the growing number of entrants from all areas of British Columbia, making it truly provincial in its scope.”

With 44 award categories, the Georgies cover residential construction of new homes, renovation of existing homes, interior design, merchandising, landscaping, sales and marketing. The all-important Customer Choice Award reflects feedback from people who have experience dealing with CHBA BC member home builders, renovators and developers.

At the 2016 awards gala, the East Kootenay's New Dawn Developments Ltd. came away with its first Georgie Award. New Dawn won the award for the best single family detached home up to 2,000 square feet and under $500,000 for the Novak residence in Cranbrook's Northwood Estates.

For Moody, “Winning a Georgie Award is known as the industry stamp of quality. New Dawn Developments and all of the 2016 winners represent the high level of professionalism and excellence that we have come to expect within the residential construction industry.”

The judging panel is made up of industry professionals from outside of B.C. Judges from across Canada and the USA are selected because of their specific area of expertise and standing within their respective local home builder associations.

“The judging panel scores each anonymous project according to the category criteria, and it is no easy task to stand out as a winner among the elite company of entrants we receive each year,” said Moody.
