Working with copper
Andy West discovered his passion for metal work while employed at a craft-based college in the United Kingdom. He then opted to leave a degree in music technology behind, and started apprenticing in his newly discovered art. He specialized in spoon forging, and is now looking to share his skills by teaching them to others.
West came to British Columbia last year thanks to a few of his other interests—climbing, snowboarding and travel. The ski hill brought him to Revelstoke where he realized he still had a desire to work with metal.
Soon West discovered Spisani Designs in Revelstoke. The owner, Suzanne, has been working with West to help him get re-established, and to help others develop a love of metal work.
“I have been excited to help turn Spisani into a place where we can teach others,” said West.
West now stocks a line of his work at the Spisani Designs store, and he is able to complete commission work. He is also offering weekend courses on spoon forging and copper bowl forming. Additionally, silver jewelry forging classes will be taking place on Tuesday evenings.
“I am excited about new ideas (on how) to work metal, and pushing myself into learning new techniques,” said West. “I love sharing with people how metal can be worked, objects created and the excitement and wonder this brings.”
