In the tiny community of Silverton (pop 195), five kilometres south of New Denver, B.C., Kathy Provan’s shop, Sew Much More, is a place where traditional needlecrafts are being preserved. Provan offers classes in knitting, crocheting and felting, and the materials needed for these crafts. She also does mending and alterations, and provides expert needlecraft advice on a drop-by basis. She encourages appreciation for handmade items and enjoys having needlecrafters spend time working on their projects in her shop. Provan hopes to generate interest in a fibre festival for next summer, where people can bring their naturally produced fibres, and spinners and weavers can demonstrate their traditional crafts.
