You can't say no to Ruth Ramdin's special treats at the Downtown Deli & Catering Company. — Lisa Crane photo

Ruth Ramdin owned Kalamazoo, a successful casual-dining restaurant in Marysville, before she opened Downtown Deli & Catering Company in the Kimberley platzl. She needed a venue to cater from, as her talents were in high demand. Ramdin caters for private parties and dinners, and her café offers a tantalizing array of delicatessen products. The Downtown Deli has a great blackboard menu, featuring lunches and gourmet treats, with specialities including borscht and blackened chicken.

Ramdin enjoys her busy life running the deli.

“I love the comings and goings of all the people," she said, "and I have met some really great friends."

Ramdin also sells her own line of products—such as her Creole seasoning—which she sends to places as far away as Toronto and San Francisco. Many have asked for recipes, but to no avail.

“They will have to wait until I get around to doing my cookbook,” said Ramdin.

It will be worth the wait.
