Krista Turcasso is a born writer with a deep and active love for the community of Fernie, B.C. Her business partnership with graphic designer Vanessa Croome began almost 10 years ago, and the two founded Claris Media, publishers of Fernie Fix lifestyle magazine. Through the magazine Turcasso gets great satisfaction from showcasing the people, art, architecture, cuisine, recreation, services and businesses in Fernie.

In addition to writing articles for Fernie Fix and publishing the magazine, Turcasso volunteers for a variety of community events and initiatives and is a busy mother and wife.

How did you come to be in the magazine business?

This line of work seemed to choose me. My undergraduate degree was in English literature and I have always been passionate about writing. I realized that there was a niche in (Fernie’s) market that was not being met. There was so much going on in our community, and tourism and recreation were on the rise. I joined forces with my business partner, Vanessa Croome, and we came up with a publication we thought would help to promote these growing industries and trends in our community.

What is it about your work that has you excited to get out of bed in the morning?

We've been publishing the Fernie Fix for nearly 10 years, and I love the people that we meet through our publication. It's those people who keep the content interesting and fresh. They bring life to our community through creating new events, volunteering, showcasing their talents in writing, photography and art and we have a platform to share this with the people who live and visit here. I am so grateful, every day, that I have this amazing job. It keeps me connected to this town, and I am continually learning with each magazine we print.

What is your business focus for 2016?

Continuing to keep our publications fresh by finding new writers, stories, and artists to feature. Also, we are putting a lot of energy towards our website, FernieFix.com with the addition of our e-Newsletters and our social media channels. These new ways of communicating are great tools to ensuring all markets are reached, and that Fernie is at the forefront of people's minds.

Why did you decide to become an entrepreneur in the Kootenays?

I grew up in Fernie, and was raised by parents that both ran their own businesses. Entrepreneurship is in my blood, just like Fernie is. I couldn't imagine a better place to raise my family, explore the outdoors on my bike or skis, or run a business. I love the flexibility living here and running a business allow me, and the opportunities it provides me and my family.
