Otter Books has now entered its 10th year in business in Nelson. Owner Letty Bartels renamed the store when she bought it from 30-year merchant, Oliver’s Books. Over time, the bookstore has become something of a landmark in the West Kootenay city.

Bartels and her store manager, Samara Nicoll, agree that a staff who are dedicated readers themselves is an asset to sales.

“Otter Books strives to offer the best service and prices possible,” said Bartels. “All the staff are avid readers and derive enormous satisfaction from making their customers happy.”

Customers are encouraged to take their time browsing through the shelves, and even to sit down and relax with their selections. Bartels said that the store is able to provide a very fast and comprehensive special-order service at no extra cost, and sells a large selection of calendars, journals, greeting cards and magazines. Otter Books also carries a good selection of sale books in every category.

Nicoll appreciates Nelson’s culture of shopping locally and supporting independent merchants, and said that at Otter Books they try to repay that loyalty with exceptional service and a wide selection of books by local authors.
