In the heart of downtown is Kimberley’s newest restaurant, Heartbeet Vegetarian Bistro. The name is inspired, of course, by the humble beet—and the fact that a healthy lifestyle (eating vegetables) can make your heart beat for longer.

Owners Michel Kuhn and Nicole Vogt hail from Switzerland, live in Cranbrook and work in Kimberley. Vogt, a dancer, has enjoyed working in the restaurant industry in Switzerland and Canada and Kuhn began chef school at age 16.

“With a degree in hotel and restaurant management and stops in Geneva, Israel and Canada, my backpack is filled with a lot of experience,” said Kuhn.

The couple's restaurant offers a vegetarian-inspired menu. They use organic and local ingredients where possible, as well as the freshest ingredients from their very own garden. What is on the menu reflects what the couple have been growing. Kuhn and Vogt are enjoying learning to grow a variety of vegetables and fruits for their diners' tables.

Kuhn said that they are extremely pleased with how the business has taken off.

“It is great to see so many guests returning once they made it in for the first time,” said Kuhn. “People seem to love the food and the atmosphere, whether they come in for a small bite and a glass of wine or a full meal on a night out.”

The couple really enjoy Kimberley and are impressed by the community's many entrepreneurs.

“The fact that many other young entrepreneurs chose Kimberley for their new ventures makes us proud to be part of this shift,” said Kuhn.

Vogt and Kuhn said they love the vibe and the atmosphere of the city, and believe Kimberley has it all—outdoors, shopping and social life.
