A new name for an old favourite
The Hot Spot Diner has reopened to an enthusiastic clientele in Trail, B.C.
Nick Caracciolo and his wife, Colleen, are the new owners of the Hot Spot Diner, formerly called The Spot, in Trail, B.C. The Spot closed down about a year ago, and the Caracciolos bought it and reopened the restaurant in December 2013, as a ’50s-style diner.
Nick said customers are really happy to have the restaurant open again—and we have our own evidence that that’s true. The Hot Spot Diner attained a top spot in the 2014 Kootenay Business magazine Best Places to Eat & Drink Awards. Nick answered some questions for us about his history and the Hot Spot Diner.
What’s your role at the restaurant?
I cook and I manage the place—we have a staff of four and we’ve just hired a breakfast cook, so we’re now open for breakfast—7 a.m. to 8 p.m., year round.
Are you a longtime Trail resident?
I’ve been here for two years. I opened another restaurant first—Smokin’ Blues & Barbecue, and TripAdvisor called it one of the best restaurants in Trail.
So what led you to buy The Spot?
The Spot was available, and it has more square footage, more parking and a better location than we had at Smokin’ Blues, so it was the obvious thing to do.
What’s your signature dish?
Fish and chips is our signature dish—we get rave reviews on it. I’ve incorporated the smokehouse into our menu, so we also have great ribs and amazing chicken. Our sandwiches are great, and our chicken club is absolutely incredible.
Where do your menu ideas come from?
I get my inspiration from the customers. Whatever they ask for, I’ll try to put it on the menu. I’m very customer-service oriented. By the way, we also own the Castlegar Borscht Hut, if you want some great ethnic food.
Where are some of your own favourite places to eat, when you go out?
I lived in Smithers (B.C.) for years and years, and there’s a little steak and pasta house there called Savalas that had the most amazing lasagnas and pasta dishes. Locally, I frequent the Arlington (Bar & Grill)—their nachos are absolutely to die for, and great value.
