Proud of their products, proud of their people
Pride is a common topic when talking with Mike Hambalek, the owner of Caliper Machine & Hydraulics—and with good reason
Mike Hambalek, the owner and general manager of Caliper Machine & Hydraulics, has many reasons to be proud of his company—and his co-workers. Hambalek has been working for Caliper for 15 years; many of the 14 staff have upwards of 20 years experience at the company. When talking about his line of work, it is obvious that Hambalek loves the atmosphere found at Caliper.
“They’re phenomenal employees, friends and co-workers,” said Hambalek. “It’s fun coming to work every day.”
As a machine shop, Caliper repairs parts for its clients, many of whom are large-scale mining companies, including several that operate in the United States. Caliper also creates new parts and prototypes, such as industrial wipers for P&H Mining in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. But though some of their products are destined for international locations, they have also created some pieces closer to home, such as the Cranbrook Arches.
Three and a half years ago, Hambalek bought out his business partner. A year afterward, he began working on Caliper's five-year plan to revamp the company building, making it a place its employees could be proud to work in.
The 37 year-old building was completely renovated, including the front of the building and the offices within. Currently, a new welding bay is being constructed; a new CNC lathe and computerized CNC milling machine have been added to Caliper's arsenal. Construction with continue in the spring of 2012; Hambalek hopes to see a water jet shop and other new equipment.
Having a new building and shop reflects what Hambalek said Caliper is known for—quality work and quality service.
“I’m proud that I get to work with my guys and be on the floor with them,” he said. “With their help, we brought the quality up, and now, it’s what we strive for. Everything we do is the best.”
