Embracing the arts

Artist Michael Flisak has recently set up the Flisak Contemporary Art Gallery in Golden.

"I have recently moved to Golden and was looking for studio space," said Flisak. "I happened across this beautiful storefront and decided for a slightly larger investment I could also have a gallery space to show my own work. I am starting slow and small, but here is the direction I am trying to move in."

Flisak focuses on contemporary concepts in art, rather than the landscapes and other more conventional subjects more commonly seen in exhibits.

"If you look around you will find many galleries showing landscape art," he said. "I do not do landscapes and have always had difficulty finding places to show my work. So I am trying to create an alternative space where art not shown in other galleries can be seen. The focus is on high quality, contemporary works that are generated through the exploration of an idea."

At the present time, Flisak is showing his own work, and there are also two studio spaces where other local artists can rent space. He is also hosting challenges where artists can enter their creations centred on a particular theme. In December, Flisak held a challenge where artists had to produce a piece of artwork based on the cube. There was a show and sale after the contest ended.

Flisak will also be starting life drawing classes, and more plans are in the works.
