Kerry Murray opened Unique Windows & Solariums in 1992, and he still has the same simple mission that he had then: to provide his customers with the best possible products at the best possible prices.

Murray provided some insights into the philosophy that makes his business a success and allows him a balanced personal life.

What do you consider to be the best thing about your job?

I like working with customers to transform their homes into something more modern and energy efficient. People renovate for reasons of esthetics and energy efficiency, and they often tell me that there’s a benefit they didn’t anticipate: quietness. The new windows insulate and seal so efficiently, they really keep the outside world from intruding.

You tend to say “we” when you talk about your business practices. Do you have a business partner?

No—I just always say “we” because we think of ourselves as a team. We have long-term employees rather than using subcontractors, so we can guarantee the quality of the work we do. We get the job done properly even if it takes a bit of extra time. I’d rather justify the cost up front than apologize for poor quality later on.

What do you do for recreation?

Spending time with family is number 1. We spend a lot of time at Whiteswan Lake, and it’s great because cellphones don’t work up there! When I’m done work, I like to take a complete break and focus on my family.
