Need a guide to the Columbia Valley?
The 91sheep website can hook you up with products, services and events
Thea Hansen has created 91sheep, a unique online resource for anyone wanting to find anything in the Columbia Valley.
What prompted you to start your business?
Living and working in the (Columbia) Valley for the past 25 years, and having owned a business here, I was always being approached and asked “Where do I go? Where do I find (this or that)? What do I do?” I was always ready to give a list of contacts or web addresses to help, but it can be frustrating and inconvenient for people who do not want to do a lot of searching or have never been here before. 91sheep is kind of like a handshake to the Valley, where one can put a face and find an easy link to a business, artist, event or just help people find stuff to do.
What insight has your business given you that you’d like to share?
I believe in promoting the companies I list and I believe in my company. The 91sheep idea is about the flock: help the flock; support the flock; if you’re in the flock then use the flock. It all comes down to networking.
The more you can share your experiences with clients and customers, the more valuable you become and the more you become their go-to person. Word of mouth is so very powerful—including through social media—it’s worth gold.
Can you share some words of wisdom from a former mentor?
My grandfather always said that your reputation and your education are two very light suitcases, and you need to guard them with your life.
What has been surprising to you in your business?
I’m happy and surprised at the growth of the company in such a short time. I am also delighted with the things I have learned about local business owners and the amazing entrepreneurs up and down the Valley. The variety and options that are available, from professional to retail, are truly awesome.
What’s your plan for going forward?
91sheep is venturing into event planning. The first Ewenique Production is this fall, and if everything goes well (it) will be followed by another trade show of some kind in the spring. Once again, it’s all about networking and promoting the Valley.
