Just keep going
Starting strong is good, but finishing is what counts
What would you be doing if you weren’t doing your present job?
I was in construction before I got into building inspection, so I’d probably still be doing that.
What was your first job?
My first job was in a sawmill. The work was hard but the money was good. At that young age I had an opportunity to take an apprenticeship in construction, so I took it and found I really liked it. I spent 22 years in construction and I’ve been doing home inspections for 14.
Do you have a one-line philosophy?
I like “Illegitimi non carborundum.” In family-friendly language it means, “Don’t let life grind you down.” I think we need to remember that success is only one step past our failure, and just keep going.
Who or what inspires you?
I’m inspired by young people. When I spend time with my grandkids, I realize that those are the ones we’re doing it for.
Do you have a piece of advice to offer those just beginning their working life?
Yes: Do it—whatever it is. If you have a dream, begin it. And just as important, finish it! If it’s not completed, there’s not much worth in it.
