In 2003, Michael Borch decided to go into business for himself in Nelson, B.C. His specialty headwear shop—mainly selling Rally caps—evolved through the years into Baker Street Menswear, which is a welcome part of the retail offerings in the West Kootenay.

Borch spoke with us in early August and we got some insight into the man behind the menswear.

Can you remember any lesson you might have learned from your very first job?

My first job was at Burger King during the summer of Grade 9. I was happy to get the job even though it was only for the summer—and it certainly set the basis for a good work ethic. Through that job I realized the importance of a good work reference.

What’s your passion outside work?

That would be my family activities, and then my sports. I do a lot of hockey, baseball, cross-country skiing—as much as I can. This is such a great area for outdoor activities.

Can you offer some advice to anyone just beginning their business venture?

Make sure there is a need in the marketplace for your product or service. Start small if you can, and try to avoid borrowing a lot of money. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice—people are generally happy to help a new entrepreneur and are very forthcoming with their experiences.
