Giuliano takes on a second term as Fernie’s mayor
Mary Giuliano has committed to continuing to serve her community as mayor
Mary Giuliano is happy to be entering her second term as mayor of Fernie, B.C. There are projects close to her heart that were begun in her first term, and she would like to continue to work on them. Giuliano shared her second term perspective with Kootenay Business magazine.
What was your motivation for seeking re-election?
I’m a people person and I love to serve. I gave the issue considerable thought, and decided that I wanted to make the commitment for another term. I’m happy that we now have a four-year term because it allows us extra time as a team to accomplish our goals.
What is the character trait that will be most valuable to you as mayor?
I’m very approachable and I’m willing to listen and always do my best.
What might be your biggest personal challenge in the next six months?
I’d always like to see results sooner than they happen. No matter how much we try to streamline the process at City Hall, there are provincial laws that cause things to go slow, so it always takes a long time to actually achieve results.
What goal are you most looking forward to working on?
I’m looking forward to working on our zoning bylaw updates and overseeing some new developments that are happening, including a new RV park that will be built on the former gymkhana grounds. I’d really love to see a new college campus in Fernie, offering trades training, and it would be great to have a convention centre in Fernie. Both are big undertakings, but would be of great benefit to this area. You have to begin with a dream in order to make things happen.
What are your favourite leisure activities?
I love to make meals for my husband and my family whenever I can, and just spending time with them. I enjoy attending community events and I love to write my blog on Fernie.com. When I can manage it, I love to watch my soap opera—there’s one that I’ve been watching since I was a teenager.
