It's hard to find a place that feels like home, but it's possible—Rupert Taylor fell in love with Fernie, so we asked him a few questions about his lifestyle and business.

What do you do in your downtime?

In the summer I love mountain biking on Fernie’s huge array of epic trails. As a Brit, and with limited prior riding experience, you can't imagine how awesome it is to be able to access such fantastic trails from my back door.

After a hot ride, I love to cool off in the Elk River before heading to one of Fernie's many bars for a well-deserved beer. I came to Fernie to work as a snowboard instructor, but since setting up the Nonstop (Adventure) ski and snowboard program in 2002, I've had to spend more time in the office. But I always make sure I get out on the powder days and love every minute.

If someone were visiting you from out of town, where would you take them?

If they were coming in the winter, I’d take them up to the ski hill and show them the stunning views from the top of the new Polar Peak chairlift, or if the conditions were right I might take them touring with friends. In summer, I’d take them on a float down the Elk (River) and show them one of my favourite bike trails such as Project Nine, and if we had time I’d take them to Silver Springs for some cliff jumping. We’d also definitely go for a beer and a steak at Cincott’s.

What do you like about doing business in your community?

Having worked in the hustle and bustle of London, England, for much of my career, I massively appreciate the warm welcome I've received from the business community in Fernie. We work with many local stores, contractors and outfitters, and enjoy fantastic relationships with all of them. There's a professional yet relaxed attitude in Fernie, and business owners here seem well versed at keeping the work/life balance in good health.

Why did you choose to start your business here?

I had heard of Fernie while spending a winter in Quebec—I was told I had to come and live here because of three things: epic terrain, epic snow and an amazingly friendly, welcoming community. After three years at uni, I finally made it and found all three promises to be true. I quickly fell in love with the place and knew I wanted to tie my life and career with this town. I am extremely happy with my decision, as Fernie has become a great home and my business has flourished here because our clients have also loved it so much.
