Castlegar has a world of backcountry trails near by. Once temperatures drop, ice fishing and snowmobiling are favourite activities, and the splendid terrain is well used by hikers too.

Perhaps most popular is the cross-country skiing in Castlegar. The Paulson cross-country ski area offers 45 kilometres of trails maintained by the Castlegar Nordic Ski Club.

For history buffs and outdoor lovers alike, Zuckerberg Island Park has the best of both worlds. This heritage site has a rich background and includes the authentic Russian Orthodox Chapel House built by Alexander Zuckerberg himself. The park consists of eight hectares of woodland territory.
