Welding competition at COTR fabricates winners

For the past 16 years College of the Rockies has been involved in the Skills Canada Kootenay regional secondary school welding competition. Students from the East and West Kootenay took part in the competition on Saturday, March 5 in the college’s welding shop.

The students first wrote a theory exam consisting of safety questions then built a structure from blueprints including layout, cutting, fabrication and welding. They were judged by Rob Schwarzer and Colin Makeiv from Selkirk College, Ken McKay, Tim Ross and Bart Gibson from College of the Rockies. Generous prizes were donated by Air Liquide Canada Inc., Prax Air, Fab-Rite Services Ltd., Varsteel and Acklands-Grainger Inc. of Cranbrook.

The winners were: First place, Logan Shubin, L.V. Rogers Secondary School, Nelson; second place, Quinn Cowie, L.V Rogers Secondary School, Nelson; and third place, Ryan Bohn, Elkford Secondary School.
