Cranbrook and area biggest employer, gave the monthly Chamber of Commerce luncheon an update report.

Tembec representative Troy Hromadnik told the crowd that the Skookumchuk Pulp Mill is the company’s best asset. The local mill in Elko and Canal Flats are operating at full capacity to supply the pulp mill with chips.

Whereas the lumber market is “challenged.” Tembec forecast operating with 97-cent Canadian dollar and high exchange rate ($1.03 or 1.04 Canadian) is costing the company a lot of money.  For every one-cent increase in the exchange it costs Tembec $1 million dollars in revenue. Tembec is an integrated forest company and employs almost 1,000 people in the East Kootenay.
