Sommelier training at college
Wine Fundamentals Level I is an introductory course designed for the novice wine enthusiast who simply wants to enhance their enjoyment of wines, or those looking to build their hospitality career. It will be offered through the Cranbrook Continuing Education department at College of the Rockies starting Monday, October 18.
This is the first of three levels required to become a certified wine sommelier through the International Sommelier Guild, an organization aimed at setting the benchmark for wine knowledge within the hospitality industry.
Continuing education programmer Danette Polzin said, “A sommelier or wine steward, is a trained and knowledgeable wine professional commonly working in fine restaurants who specializes in all aspects of wine service as well as wine and food pairing.”
Wine Fundamentals Level 1 covers the different components of wine appearance, aroma, and flavour. Participants have the opportunity to taste wines from around the world and will be introduced to fortified and sparkling wines as well.
“We’re very excited about this course, as it is a first for the Kootenay region,” said Polzin. “Historically, people wanting this training would have to travel to Calgary, Kelowna, Vancouver or another big centre to receive it. This is an excellent course for both novice wine enthusiasts who want to learn more about wine, and those working in tourism and hospitality who want to build additional service skills.”
