SMS Equipment Inc.: Canada’s largest Komatsu dealer expand operations in Elkford, BC

SMS Equipment Inc. has reason to celebrate — their Elkford branch major expansion project is complete. The new addition to their existing location in Elkford, officially opens on October 3, 2013. The newly expanded premises are short distance from several surrounding Elk Valley mining operations.

The new 50,000-square-foot building was custom built to suit the needs of the heavy equipment mining industry in the region. The building sits on a fully developed 10-acre lot and includes various beneficial features such as shop bays equipped with 40' side mega doors, one 100-ton overhead crane, three 40-ton overhead cranes and many other industrial-friendly features.

The expansion allows SMS Equipment to further enhance existing service to the surrounding industries.

"Our parts operation has moved from a 6,500-square-foot building to a state-of-the-art 15,000-square-foot warehouse, including two Schaefer automated vertical lift parts management systems. The new parts warehouse is designed to handle our growing business, increase productivity, and efficiently store and manage the almost 10,000 line items we carry to support our customers. From small parts to Komatsu 930E haul truck drive motors, SMS has what customers need to maximize fleet uptime," said Jim Prince, operations manager.

There is a new extensive underground water retention system to prevent erosion. Plus outside shop and warehouse pads have been added that have snow melt heating systems to prevent ice and snow build up the new location was built with both safety and environment in mind.

The event is open to family, friends, colleagues, and customers and will serve a pancake breakfast from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. The official ceremony will start at 11am. The BBQ starts at 1p.m. and to until 4 p.m. SMS Equipment is located on Intata Road, Elkford, BC;
