Red Ink derails Nelson Express

After 22 years of publishing, the Nelson Express newspaper is no more. The brainchild of Nelson entrepreneur and publisher, Nelson Becker, the lively community newspaper served the Nelson area for over two decades.

Becker explained in a CBC interview that the “paper simply wasn’t selling enough advertising,” to cover its expenses.

Unfortunately, the writing has been on the wall for several years, since Black Press moved aggressively into the market to dominate the weekly print market throughout the Kootenays—particularly with the establishment of the competing weekly Nelson Star and the shuttering of the Nelson Daily News.

As one of the few independent newspaper publishers in B.C. and a member of the BCYNA (British Columbia Yukon Newspaper Association), Nelson Becker's Express in the past often attracted regional, government or national types of advertising. That revenue source also dwindled as Black Press began to dominate the BCYNA as well.

We wish Nelson Becker the best in the future. We are sad to see his energetic Express newspaper disappear from the Nelson media scene.
