The Kootenay Bakery Cafe Cooperative, a Nelson landmark for over a decade, has launched abrand new online store. The organic scratch bakery produces food that is wholesome, healthy and delicious with fresh ingredients.

Because Nelson is a health-conscious community, the bakery is skilled at producing food that can meet the needs of customers with special diets. Within its range of products there are wheat-free, gluten-free, yeast-free, fat-free, egg-free and dairy-free choices; all without compromising the bakery's standards of deliciousness.

The bakery is especially good with spelt flour, and many of the products are made with this nutrient-rich ancient grain. Products are sourced locally whenever possible, and locals look for seasonal favourites they have come to know and love.

The bakery specializes in sourdough leavened breads as well. Sourdough used the natural yeast found in grains and in the atmosphere to activate bread dough, instead of baker’s yeast. The slight fermentation that the sourdough process creates in bread dough can make sourdough easier to digest than regular yeasted breads. The online store has two types of sourdough bread available, the Selkirk sourdough and the 100 per cent rye sourdough.

The online store is an innovative way for the bakery to extend its reach beyond Nelson. Customers can order individual items or by case lot and have them delivered to their door anywhere in B.C. and Alberta. Case lot orders reduce the cost of shipping per item, so they make a lot more sense than ordering small amounts. Customers can order enough to host a great party or fill the freezer with yummy baked treats.

Online ordering makes sense for many people in the West Kootenays. Customers living in outlying areas who consider Nelson their “urban hub” may have over an hour of travel time before reaching town. A weekly, delivered bakery order can be a big time-saver and reduce total household expenses. Once the order is placed, customers can expect next-day delivery in B.C. and Alberta, as long as it’s a business day. The Kootenay Bakery Cafe accepts Pay Pal, Visa and Mastercard.
