The new Elk Valley Transfer Station is currently under construction. The long awaited civic-works project, which has been more than 15 years in the making, is well underway near Fernie.

The new transfer station will be located east of the city, directly across Highway #3 from Home Hardware and Fernie Brewing Company. The project is a joint-venture between the ciites of Fernie, Sparwood and Elkford, the BC Provincial government and the Regional District of East Kootenay. Kelowna-based builder BPR Construction is the general contractor and Fairbanks Architects designed the facility. Construction of the new facility is expected to wrap up in the spring of 2012.
