Mark Creek flume construction in Kimberley well underway

by

One of the biggest infrastructure projects to happen in Kimberley in some time is well underway.

Copcan Contracting is the main contractor and their machines are busy removing old concrete and digging a new channel.

The vision is to naturalize Mark Creek wherever possible, to mimic natural channel conditions and achieve lower water velocities and a longer service life. This will also improve aquatic habitat. Where space permits, riparian plants will be added along the banks to provide shade. In some places, engineered structures may be necessary to avoid compromising utilities and infrastructure and ensure safe passage of flows.

What will this project cost? $4.25 million is a high-end cost estimate for reconstruction of the channel along the Mark Creek flume. As the creek flows through the middle of the city, costs include measures to move water, sewer, gas, and electricity lines, as well as four bridges. Replacement costs would be higher if a new concrete-style flume were reinstalled because government standards have changed since the old flume was built.

The re-construction project is slated to continue throughout the fall 0f 2012.
