Kalesnikoff Lumber strikes a cord with Selkirk students

Selkirk College’s Renewable Resource students are raising money for their field trips by selling cords of firewood. The wood was donated by Kalesnikoff Lumber Company. — Ruby Chambers

Students in Selkirk College’s School of Renewable Resources (Integrated Environmental Planning Technology, Recreation, Fish and Wildlife Technology and Forest Technology) are raising money for their year-end field trip fund to assist with travel, accommodation, food and tour expenses. They will be selling cords of firewood, generously donated by Kalesnikoff Lumber Company.

“Thanks to Kalesnikoff Lumber and the pending support of our community members, our students will have access to funds that will help them with their field trip expenses,” said the instructor of Forest Technology, Carol Andrews. “These trips are really valuable learning experiences for our students.”

The field trips provide students with the opportunity to refine technical field skills within different ecosystems and regions of the province. Students will be actively involved in trip planning and will be presented with chances to develop communication skills, job finding skills and professionalism.

Forest Technology students, for example, usually travel to the coast where they observe coastal ecosystems and resource management issues, including First Nation forestry.

The price of the firewood is $170 per cord for unsplit wood, and $200 per cord for split wood. Kalesnikoff Lumber provided the logs and the students will be cutting and splitting the wood. A mixture of Lodgepole pine, Western larch and Douglas fir is available.
