Heavy equipment is busy at the new Canadian Tire site near the crossroads in Invermere.

Canadian Tire corporately approved the building of the store earlier this year and has obtained a dealer to operate it. With the final go-ahead from the RDEK planning department, excavating equipment recently moved onto the site and workers are busy preparing the site’s groundwork and foundation.

Canadian Tire officials had to present several revised versions of their plan to the RDEK board’s for approval, which included enhanced landscaping, stone skirting and post-and-beam architectural features.

This is one of the biggest retail developments ever in Invermere and the Columbia Valley. The new Canadian Tire store has a projected opening date of spring, 2012. This is the fifth Canadian Tire location in the Kootenays with other stores in Cranbrook, Fernie, Castlegar and Trail.
