Cranbrook’s Home Run Society swinging for the fences
Not only has Cranbrook's Home Run Society obtained a conditional Western Major Baseball League franchise, they have also rolled out their vision of what the baseball park would look like.
President of the society, Garry Slonowski, and GEC Architecture, recently presented the concept to the Cranbrook City Council. Full build out of the project would be $7.2 million but a WMBL-ready phase 1 version would carry a price tag of $4.2 million.
The new ball diamond would be located a Moir Park in Cranbrook with grandstands looking out over Steeples. Phase 1 would see 300 fixed seats and additional seating capacity on a grass berm, a scoreboard, concession, two recessed dugouts and bullpens.
Phase ll would see the park expand to hold a capacity crowd of 900. Slonowski points out that both Lethbridge and Okotoks have successful WMBL franchises and it would be great addition to the sporting community in the East Kootenay as well.
Within the last few weeks the Home Run Society released the proposed team's name, The Cranbrook Eds and its elephant moniker.
With this kind of enthusiasm it may not be long before Cranbrook baseball fans will be joining in a seventh-inning stretch refrain of, "Take me out to the ball park."
