Congratulations to Selkirk College’s 2013 Scope Award Recipients

August 29, 2013 The purpose of the SCOPE Awards is to recognize and promote both long-term and innovative professional excellence.

Faculty and staff are nominated for the awards by students and peers, and this year, three faculty members have been recognized for their outstanding performance.

Robin Higgins, a Student Access and Support Counsellor, has been recognized for exceptional performance in innovation. Nominated by a colleague, Robin is described as not only making extraordinary daily contributions in her role as a counsellor on numerous Selkirk campuses, but also expanding her role into innovative college and community endeavours. The “Tenth Street Dinner Club”, a pilot program on healthy eating and living, is just one example of Robin’s ability to bring students together for social, emotional and physical well-being.

Her colleagues describe her as someone who thinks outside the box and has a rare blend of professional skill and integrity, with a playfulness and creativity that make her entirely refreshing to work with.

Brenda Smith, Manager of Co-op Education and Employment Services, is recognized for her warm smile and fantastic personality, and as someone who cares about the future of each and every student. Many credit their success in the program, and in their careers, to her consistent support and devotion.

Her nominator says Brenda worked tirelessly to bring the co-op program from a humble start to a thriving enterprise. From the development of the Facebook page to the implementation of the Orbis portal, her efforts continue to improve student experiences and build on the success of the programs. Faculty and staff recognize her as an excellent ambassador for the college whose enthusiasm helps students succeed at Selkirk and beyond.

Rena Vandenbos is an instructor in the School of Environment and Geomatics. She teaches fisheries and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) courses.

Students describe Rena as someone who not only taught them about fish, but helped them improve their critical thinking skills, encouraged community involvement and helped them feel genuinely supported at Selkirk and outside of the college. One student said Rena has been a formative part of their college education, and has set an exceptional example of how to be professional, dedicated, knowledgeable and personable.

Rena is described by faculty as an exemplary employee through her dedication to her students, her work to improve the programs she teaches in, and her contributions to the overall workings of the college by serving on a number of college committees.

Come and celebrate with this year’s recipients. The SCOPE Awards Ceremony, sponsored by the Selkirk College Faculty Association, will be held on Thursday, September 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. All are invited to attend.
