An adventure awaits
Kimberley Snowmobile Adventures is the new replacement for Powder Hounds, a snowmobile touring company serving locals and tourists by providing wintery expeditions into the breathtaking backcountry scenery around the region.
Jeff Cook and his wife, Leah McDonald, took over from the previous owners, renaming the business and revamping operations, which is run out of Kimberley Adventure Centre—220 Ross Street.
The company runs guided half-day, full-day and night tours in the Lost Dog area near Kimberley.
Cook has a personal background in snowmobiling and previously worked with Great Canadian Snowmobile Tours and Mustang Powder, a cat-skiing operation, both located near Revelstoke
He’d heard through the grapevine that Powder Hounds was looking to sell and felt the chance to buy out an existing business that had most of the overhead already in place was too good to pass up.
“We heard about it quietly through local knowledge that they were ready to move out of the industry,” said Cook. “They’d been doing it long enough and decided it was time to do something different and we were happy to pick up the reins and give it a new face and image.”
The outfit has eight snowmobiles along with all the necessary gear like helmets, goggles, snowsuits, boots and gloves which are included in the guided tour pricing.
Sleds can also be rented daily outside of guided tours.
KSA has joined the Kimberley chamber of commerce and established relationships with businesses in the tourism industry such as Rocky Mountain Accommodations, Alpenglow Bed and Breakfast, North Star Motel, and Kimberley Alpine Resort.
The couple said effective networking between different businesses in the tourism industry helps market everyone’s product.
Cook and McDonald are both from Saskatchewan and have been together since high school, moving to the region over nine years ago.
