Nelson’s Best Western Baker Street Inn underwent a major $750,000 renovation over the winter that has brought it up to a higher level of accommodation, earning it a "Plus" designation.

Ryan Martin, managing partner with the Martin Hotel Group that owns the Best Western Plus Baker Street Inn and also the Nelson’s Hume Hotel, said the renovations came about due to a vote by independent Best Western owners to rebrand their hotels with consistent levels of accommodation – regular, plus and premier.

Martin said he wanted the Baker Street Inn to be a plus property but at the time it did not meet the high standards required and needed a “cosmetic renovation.”

The hotel has been fitted out from top to bottom with new bedding, carpets, artwork, flat-screen televisions, furniture, a redesigned lobby and even new staff uniforms.

“It instills a lot more pride in the building amongst the employees,” Martin said, noting that customers are also responding well. “The response has been really great. People have a higher expectation now.”

The renovation began in October 2010 with finishes touches added to the building just in time for the busy summer tourism season.
