Bluebelle Bistro and Beanery features innovative food and locally roasted coffee. Kootenay Business dropped into the busy restaurant, which was one of our 2011 Best of Business award winners, to have a chat with owner Christa Sheldrick.

How long have you had the business?

Five years. The space was previously a restaurant, but I worked with what I had and overhauled the patio and gardens, and repainted.

What is your background?

I have been a food vendor for 14 years and had a restaurant on wheels. I always wanted to own a restaurant.

Are you involved with the community?

I feel I am pretty community minded. I use local farmers, feature coffee from Nelson and try and support local business. I am also a big supporter of local artisans and musicians. Suzanne McLean is a local artist featured in-house.

What is your favourite menu item?

The Bistro Bowl.

Where do you go from here?

Just keep moving this place forward. There is always something happening—maybe a kitchen renovation in time.

Have there been any challenges?

It's been hard. I have a goal and I feel like I am reaching that goal.
