Backyard barbecuing turned eatery

This seasonal Invermere eatery is turning out to be a great success

by Madison Samuel-Barclay

It was a hobby of Paul Christy's that sparked the idea for the Backyard Grill, a new seasonal outdoor eatery on 7th Avenue in Invermere, just beside Blackstar Studio. When Christy and wife, Beth, weren’t running their other Invermere businesses—The Monkey’s Uncle toy store and The Rainbow Donkey children’s boutique—they’d enjoy some homemade barbecued food from Christy’s grill.

That friendly, homey atmosphere and taste is what Christy hopes to bring to the Backyard Grill’s menu and unique outdoor experience. The "interior" of the eatery is no more than a neat, cleared lot with large picnic-style tables and canopy umbrellas. A kitchen shack is located just at the back of the lot; this is where customers can place their orders and return to pick them up, or have them brought out.

Menu items, for dine-in or takeout, include barbecue classics such as hamburgers, hotdogs and sausages. Special items, however, like the pulled-pork sandwich and Jamaican jerk are also available to those looking for a more exotic taste while they dine at the shaded tables.

Rain has yet to be an obstacle for the new business, as Invermere’s heavy summer population are enjoying the food, rain or shine, according to Christy. However, the Backyard Grill will be closed for the season come mid-September, so time is running out to get your fill. For more information or to order takeout, call the Backyard Grill at 250-341-1585.
