A project to expand Canfor’s sawmill in Elko, B.C., has been moving steadily forward. It’s been a busy site in Elko as the mill has been seeing a lot of construction.

“The capital project at Elko is valued at $40 million and will include upgrades to the sawmill, the construction of a greenfield planer mill complex and increased kiln drying capacity,” said Adrien Chabot, Canfor Elko Plant Manager. “The upgrades are proceeding to plan, and we’re on track for the planer to start up in June.”

BID Group has been involved in the upgrades and is a company that prides itself on completing projects on budget and on schedule. There are expected to be approximately 100 direct or contract employees working on the project by the time it is completed.

“These investments are aligned with our strategic investments in our Kootenay assets, and are necessary to ensure our Elko facility can operate competitively in all market conditions,” said Don Kayne, president and CEO of Canfor Corporation.

The sawmill upgrades will mean that lumber will continue to be an important industry to the community. Elko and sawmill employees that live near by can be assured that Canfor is serious about investing in the area.
