As the sun was shining and the people were smiling, it was as if a flawless day for a historic event had been intentionally picked. On June 26th, Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) employees, politicians and RDCK residents gathered to celebrate the opening of the Creston & District Community Complex (CDCC).

Speeches were given by Gary Wright, RDCK chairman of the board and master of ceremonies; Kootenay-Columbia MP Jim Abbott; Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett; Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall; Gary Jackman, John Kettle and Larry Binks, the directors of Areas A, B and C, respectively; and Creston Mayor Ron Toyota.

Chris Luke Sr., chief of the Yaqan Nukiy Nation, and Harry Haberstock, a local pastor, gave blessings before the speakers lined up to cut the ribbon in front of the entrance to the complex.

After the ribbon cutting, people were invited to tour the complex, take advantage of the free swim passes being distributed, and view displays from local sports groups. Kids played ping-pong and floor hockey, and could try some of the fitness equipment available for demonstration.

It was clear to all touring the exceptional facility that its benefits will be longstanding and numerous. As John Kettle said during his opening speech, “(This) represents the future of small communities.”
