A fresh and unique place to take a break
A Break in Time Caffe is run by two very special and community-focused people in Creston, B.C.
Winner at a Glance: A Break in Time Caffe
Website: www.abreakintimecaffe.com
Owners: Husband and wife: Judy and Calvin Germann
Community involvement: We are quite involved in the community. We do a lot of benefits and fundraisers. Coming up, we’re doing work for Somalia where all the proceeds go to World Vision or the Canadian Red Cross. We did one for Haiti and raised over $3,000 just after the hurricane. We also both work at the hospital here in Creston.
Downtime activities: We love walking, and since we live in west Creston, we love the wildlife centre—it’s a gorgeous area.
Favourite Kootenay getaway: Kaslo. It’s such a great little place and reminds us so much of Europe. It has lots of quaint shops, the people are really friendly. We just fell in love with it.
First job: Calvin: working for my dad in central Switzerland, where he ran a hotel; I ran the kitchen. Judy: working at the courthouse in Creston.
Lessons along the way: Always treat people the way I want to be treated and always have grace for people because you never know their whole story. Everyone has a story.
Who inspires you: Judy: Calvin, because of how he always keeps going. Calvin: The first person who inspired me was Bob Pierce, the founder of World Vision. He is a close friend of ours and he’s the person I wanted to be.
Favourite dish on the menu: Judy: Sweet and Spicy Thai Stir-fry. Calvin: the Chicken Burrito.
