Bumble Tree, owned by Megan Lescanec, offers unique, safe and environmentally friendly products for kids. The store was a 2011 Kootenay Business Best of Business award winner, receiving Gold for Children's Wear. Lescanec says her business is a family affair and she took the time to tell us more about it.

How long have you owned the business? What is your inspiration?

I have owned the business since March of this year. I worked for the previous owners. Being a mother myself, I know how important it is to be able to find safe, unique products locally rather than going out of town for them. It's a completely different experience to be able to see the items, talk to someone knowledgeable and make that local connection and form relationships. I wanted to purchase the store to be able to continue offering that in Cranbrook and surrounding area.

What do you like about owning this business?

I like offering something unique to clients and products that are safe. One of my favourite parts of the job is helping people pick out the perfect gift and seeing their excitement when they've found the perfect item.

What is your favourite product?

I like baby Stella by Manhattan.

Do you have a mentor?

I have definitely utilized Tanis and Bridie, the previous owners. They have made themselves available for any questions that come up and I admire them for taking the initial risk in establishing the business. While I haven't had the opportunity to connect with many of them yet, I know there are many women running successful businesses in downtown Cranbrook and I hope to be able to learn from them as well.

Do you have children of your own?

Two girls, five and one. My oldest loves to be in the store with me. She's young enough to think that it is fun to help dust, sweep and mop, and she loves to make sure that everything is organized and in the right place. My youngest just likes to come in and touch as much as she possibly can. It is neat to watch my oldest develop an understanding of the business world and customer service.

What are your plans for the future?

I would like to increase the online presence of the store—maybe offer online shopping or electronic gift registries. (I want) to stay true to what Bumble Tree represents to people and to offer the same level of expertise and customer service that they have come to expect.
