Things have changed at Cranbrook’s Days Inn Hotel. The fresh, new look is evident from the moment you step into the spacious, welcoming lobby with its leather couches, high-tech fireplace and California Knockdown ceiling.

Three former banquet rooms on the main floor have been repurposed. One is a fitness room equipped with exercise machines, rubber flooring and mirrors. Another—the Sam Steele Room—is a designated meeting room. The new breakfast room is the largest of the three and farthest from the lobby—conveniently secluded if you need coffee and a bite before you’re ready to face the world. The breakfast room has plenty of seating and stations with juice, cereals, coffee, waffles, french toast and a special fridge holding yogurt and hard-boiled eggs.

“We no longer have a restaurant and bar, though you never know what may happen down the road,” said Joe Komaric, vice-president of operations for Days Inn Hotels. “For now, we’re focused on our accommodation.”

And that accommodation is lovely. All 90 guest rooms are getting new furniture, drapes, beds, fridges, microwaves, televisions—everything is brand new. Each room has a little patio with a table and two chairs overlooking the interior courtyard, where there are tables, chairs and barbeques for the use of registered guests.

“My own family surprised me here on my birthday,” Komaric said, “so we were the first ones to use the new amenities.”

Also in the interior courtyard—though not yet completed—are a hot tub, gazebo and swimming pool. It’s expected that the refurbished pool will reopen in the spring. Furnishings for the rooms were supplied by Hospitality Designs, and the furnishings for the lobby and public areas were acquired locally.

“Robin over at The Brick helped with the artwork, the couches, the bistro sets and patio furniture,” said Komaric.

Heidi Adams, Days Inn general manager, said that during the renovation, disruption to guests has been kept to a minimum, with the noisier work being scheduled for the period after guest checkout.
