College of the Rockies’ first year Bachelor of Science in Nursing students will hold a free community blood pressure clinic at Tamarack Centre on November 22 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a significant health risk for Canadians,” said Norma Sherret, Dean of Health and Human Services. “Many with hypertension are unaware of their condition and experience no symptoms. Though a single blood pressure reading is not a diagnostic measure of hypertension, this clinic provides the opportunity to have a free and accurate initial reading taken while also supporting our students in their continued learning.”

According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, high blood pressure is the number one risk factor for stroke and a major risk factor for heart disease. Monitoring blood pressure is an important way to watch for unknown health issues, especially as you age.

The Tamarack Centre was chosen in order to provide an easily accessible location with regular transit service and to give students the opportunity to engage with a cross-section of local community members.

“By offering this clinic in the community, we hope that many people will find it convenient to stop by, support our student nurses, and to learn more about their cardiovascular health,” Sherret adds.
