With a recent nod of approval from the Cranbrook city council developer, Smart Centres in Cranbrook will soon be adding another retail unit to their existing retail mix, which now includes SuperStore, Wal Mart, Mark’s, Chatters, La Vie En Rose and others.

The new free-standing retail outlet will be built between the two existing retail centres on the east side of the development. Sport Chek will be one of the new tenants and Dollar Tree, another nationally branded retailer, will be the other.

Sport Chek is the largest national retailer of sporting goods, footwear and apparel in Canada.

“We've got the tools to get people moving on the path to wellness. Our mission is to inspire every Canadian toward a fit, healthy and active lifestyle. Sport Chek believes that a healthy lifestyle can be adopted at any age, any level and within any activity. With this in mind, Sport Chek has joined forces with a number of organizations geared toward encouraging communities to be active,” states their website. ”Our relationships with many national and regional amateur sports and active lifestyle organizations have helped us reach out to Canadians of all ages, at all levels. From grassroots sporting organizations aimed at getting kids involved in activity at an early age to our ties with national, amateur-level sporting organizations, Sport Chek is committed helping communities get active.”

Sport Chek’s parent company, the Forzani Group, operates stores under the following corporate and franchise banners: Sport Chek, Sport Mart, National Sports, Athletes World, Sports Experts, Intersport, Atmosphere (formerly Coast Mountain Sports), Tech Shop, Econosports, Pegasus, Nevada Bob's Golf, Hockey Experts, The Fitness Source and S3.

In 2011, Canadian Tire bought Forzani for $771 million, and has since embarked on a large scale brand restructuring.

Construction of the new Cranbrook store  is slated to begin later in 2013.
