The West Kootenay may be famous for its mountains, lakes and independent spirit, but there’s another reason to wander its downtown streets: the sheer number of places where yesterday’s treasures get a second life.

From thrift stores supporting local community programs to carefully curated vintage boutiques, antique shops and consignment stores, the region offers plenty of ways to shop pre-loved.

Castlegar

Castlegar has one of the West Kootenay’s strongest concentrations of secondhand shops, with options ranging from traditional thrift to furniture and vintage fashion.

• Castlegar ReStore — A must for anyone whose idea of treasure involves furniture, building materials, hardware or home-improvement supplies. The Habitat for Humanity shop gives used materials and furnishings another life while supporting affordable housing initiatives.

• Classic Shop Thrift & Retail — A traditional community thrift stop with secondhand clothing, household goods and other rotating finds.

• Hospital Auxiliary Treasure Shop — Donated clothing, home goods, furniture and collectibles help support local health-care initiatives. The shop also holds monthly auctions, adding another element to the treasure hunt.

• Eurythmy Studio & Bookstore — A charming used-book destination where browsing the shelves is part of the experience. It’s a natural stop for readers looking for secondhand titles and unexpected discoveries.

• Front Street Antiques — A genuine treasure trove of antique and vintage objects, from old photographs and books to cameras, pottery, ephemera and wonderfully obscure curiosities. The shop is currently operating from 416 Front Street.

Nelson

Nelson is the undisputed heavyweight of West Kootenay vintage shopping. Regional tourism describes Nelson, Kaslo and Crawford Bay as particularly strong secondhand destinations, while the city’s current thrift listings include a remarkable variety of thrift, vintage and consignment stores.

• Free Time Consignment — The place to go when your ideal secondhand find is a good piece of outdoor gear. Formerly OK Gear in Rossland, Free Time moved to Nelson in 2024 and specializes in quality used equipment and clothing for skiing, snowboarding, biking, hiking, camping, climbing, paddling and other outdoor pursuits.

• Horse & Snake Vintage — A carefully curated vintage clothing shop on Baker Street, with an emphasis on comfortable, practical and distinctive pieces collected, cleaned and prepared for a new life.

• I.O.D.E. Thrift Shop — A compact downtown thrift shop known for affordable prices and a rotating selection of clothing, household goods and craft/sewing materials.

• Moon Monster — Hidden downstairs on Baker Street, this quirky vintage shop specializes in clothing, jewellery, trinkets and oddball treasures. Regional tourism calls it a distinctive destination for one-of-a-kind finds.

• Positive Apparel Thrift Store — One of Nelson’s major thrift institutions, Positive Apparel has been operating since 2009 and combines secondhand retail with textile diversion and recycling. It’s part of the city’s larger resale culture and offers a broad range of donated goods.

• Sat Naam Temple & Thrift Boutique — A smaller thrift boutique offering secondhand clothing, accessories and household goods.

• SHARE Nelson — A community-minded secondhand store selling donated clothing, furniture, housewares, vintage and retro items and more. Purchases help support Our Daily Bread, Nelson’s community lunch program, while keeping reusable goods out of the landfill.

• Silver Lining Consignment — A Nelson institution since 1983, specializing in quality pre-owned women's clothing, footwear and accessories. The boutique is still operating at 460 Ward Street.

• Strutters Boutique — A contemporary women's boutique with a secondhand twist: rather than operating as a traditional consignment store, Strutters buys and resells gently used clothing, shoes and accessories, allowing it to curate its selection.

Trail

Trail has a particularly interesting mix because its secondhand shopping extends beyond clothing into records, craft supplies, tools, furniture and retro goods.

• And More Second Hand Store — A treasure hunt for people who don't necessarily want clothes. The shop specializes in tools, automotive, construction and gardening equipment, housewares, fabric and sewing supplies, craft materials, vinyl records, CDs, DVDs and décor.

• The Rusty Bird Vintage Boutique — A curated vintage clothing shop offering pre-owned clothing, shoes and accessories.

• The Salvation Army Thrift Store — Trail’s traditional all-purpose thrift stop, with donated clothing, footwear, furniture, books and household goods. The store is currently located at 1460 Cedar Avenue.
