Kootenay’s only self-service visitor’s centre having busy summer

If you stopped at the Artisan’s Village at Crawford Bay lately and you require more information on what to do and see in the Eastshore and Kootenay Lake areas, then you may want to visit the Kootenay’s only self-service visitors centre—and possibly the smallest visitors centre in B.C.

Opened last year, the little visitor’s centre, was staffed and funded by grant money. When that funding source dried up for this year, the decision was to convert the visitor centre to a self-service outlet.

“It has been very popular all summer long and people seem to like the concept of a self-service visitor centre,” says Janet Wallace, owner of the Barefoot Handweaving shop located next the visitor’s centre.

“People can pop into the building and get whatever brochures or maps they may need. It seems to work really well.”

The Eastshore business community is also funding a new initiative this summer—with a representative riding the Osprey Ferry handing out maps, brochure and tourism information to travelers taking the ferry across Kootenay Lake.

Visitors traffic has been busy throughout the summer along Kootenay Lake’s Eastshore.
